Fazunchar
Hand painted show windows
These window shops were painted during Fazunchar an Urban Art Festival in Figueiró dos Vinhos, in the Portuguese countryside. This little village has a particularly interesting fact that they had their own dialect, called ‘Laínte’. This strange language was created by local road salesman so they could communicate secretly, avoiding potential dangers but also maybe tricking some customers. The name ‘Fazunchar’ is Laínte for the ‘Doing’ [Fazer in Portuguese}.
As a lettering artist, language has a direct relation with my work, so I used the opportunity of writing these strange words to revive the almost lost dialect throughout the Village’s streets. Each composition was an overlap of the Portuguese wording, with its Laìnte counterpart. It was especially rewarding to get comments from some locals, as they tried to remember some of the words they used to hear from their parents and grandparents.
