36 Calligraphic Tools
Experimental Calligraphy alphabet
Contemporary calligraphy is breaking off from the standard rules and scripts present in this historically rooted artform. Much of its legacy, changes in form and style mostly due to technical innovations. It is obvious that the tool influences the ‘ductus’. We can see how the Latin alphabet forms evolved from the flat and pointed nibs, while the Chinese grew from brush strokes. If tools dictate how letters have been drawn and structured, creating new tools is creating new shapes and new scripts. As an entry for 36 Days of Type, I wrote an alphabet where each letter was achieved using an uncommon tool, ranging from toothpicks, a bath sponge, a finger or a water gun! As each result was unexpected it was a thrilling experience to do it every day.
